From Bulldog Stadium to Davis Wade Stadium and now on to Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.
Former Greenwood High standout Marquiss Spencer had his name called in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft late Saturday afternoon by the Denver Broncos.
“I was happy to have my name called. It was a bit nerve-wracking,” said Spencer, who was pick No. 253 of the draft. “I had mixed emotions because I feel like I’m better than the No. 253rd pick. It was tough sitting around waiting. I was with my family, and I was beginning to wonder if we were going to hear my name called.
“I only had a Zoom meeting with the Broncos. I was hearing from some other teams, but it surprised me when they called.”
Clinton Gatewood, Spencer’s high school coach at Greenwood, feels the Broncos are getting a gem at No. 253.
“Marquiss is going to prove to be the best No. 253 pick from any draft,” said Gatewood. “It’s a good situation for him going to Denver. He will be able to play either tackle or end for them.”
Spencer is listed at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds. His senior season at MSU saw him record 30 total tackles (16 solos) with three sacks. He only played in nine games after suffering an apparent neck injury against Auburn. He didn’t play in the bowl game against Tulsa.
As a junior, he appeared in four games and received a redshirt after missing the final nine games due to injury.
