Leflore County High School’s football team will march in a parade this weekend in Itta Bena to celebrate the school’s first appearance in a state title game.
Mayor Reginald Freeman said the parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, will leave the high school, go through downtown and conclude at the L.T. Brazil Center, 600 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
After the parade, a ceremony will be held at the center, where the players and coaches will be recognized and fed.
On Nov. 26, Leflore County High defeated Charleston High School, 24-22, in the North State 2A championship game in Charleston to advance to the state title game. On Dec. 4, the Tigers lost to Scott Central, 72-24, in Hattiesburg.
Despite the difficult end to the season, students and officials in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District have celebrated the team’s accomplishment. Leflore County High is the district’s only high school to reach the state championship in football since the Greenwood and Leflore County districts merged in 2019.
To honor the Tigers, the district has organized a banquet, which will be held Thursday at the school.
Leflore County District 4 Supervisor Eric Mitchell, who represents Itta Bena, also recently proposed a resolution to recognize the team. “For them to get that far, that means a lot” for Itta Bena as well as the school, he said. The board unanimously approved the resolution.
