The Pillow Academy tennis team battled Heritage Academy into five third-set tiebreakers during Thursday’s home opener, but the Mustangs came up just short in a 5-4 defeat at Twin Rivers.
No. 2 singles player Druvh Patel lost his third-set tiebreaker, 10-6, against Garrett Vaughn. Top boys singles player Noah Lary suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss versus Joshua Tedford.
Top girls singles player Dia Chawla staved off six match points in her third-set tiebreaker before falling, 12-10, in an upset by Heritage’s Elizabeth Nichols. Avery McDaniel beat Mallory Ward, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 2 singles matchup.
In doubles action, Pillow’s top boys duo of William Brown and Sumner Tackett lost, 6-4, 4-6, 5-10, against Heritage’s Brayden Oswalt and Drew Glenn. Arnav Thakur and Walker Saia got revenge by stealing a victory at No. 2 boys doubles, edging Brandon Glover and Collin Atkins 10-4 in the third-set tiebreaker.
The top girls doubles duo of Izzy Hodges and Madeline Carroll dropped a 3-6, 6-4 decision to Kendall Moody and Ellie Dawson. The No. 2 doubles pair of Annie Powers and Jane Kimmel Buford picked up a 7-6, 4-6, 13-11 win over Reese Ketchum and Swayze Calloway.
Millie Smith and Hayes Brown earned a victory in the mixed doubles matchup.
The Patriots prevailed in three of five third-set tiebreakers in their tight win against the Mustangs (1-2).
Pillow returns to the court next Tuesday at home against Bayou Academy. Matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Twin Rivers.
