The Browning Progressive Civic League will be sponsoring its 18th annual Labor Day festival Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 at Browning Community Park.
The Labor Day celebration is the main event of the year for the group, and it helps raise funds for the Browning Community and other organizations that the league supports.
This year's theme is "A United Effort for All Inclusion," which Claudine Brown, chairman of the Labor Day committee and president of the Browning Progressive Civic League, said is meant to signify how their festival is open to everyone.
The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with the opening ceremonies, which will include a brick-laying ceremony at the Browning Well. Donors' names have been engraved on the bricks, which were sponsored for $50 each, and they will be laid around the historic well during the event.
Following the opening ceremonies, a basketball game and other activities will be hosted at Browning Community Park.
At 4 p.m. on Sunday, the Founder's Day program will be held at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.
There are four churches in the Browning Community, and each year they take turns hosting the Founder's Day program, which presents a message about the history of the community.
The main part of the festival will take place on Labor Day, and will begin with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by a live broadcast from the WGNL radio station at noon.
Monday's festivities also will include motorcycle rides, basketball games, volleyball games and various activities for children. At 5 p.m., there will be live entertainment provided by a band and a D.J.
Spots for vendors are available, and the charge is $30, or $40 if they will require an electrical hook-up.
The public is invited to this alcohol-free festival. Admission and parking are free, and food and soft drinks will be sold during the event. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
The Browning Progressive Civic League is a non-profit community improvement organization. The volunteer members sponsor activities for children and support various charities, including the American Cancer Society, local nursing homes and the Greenwood Interfaith Ministries Community Kitchen.
