Registration for the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library’s Collaborative Summer Learning/Reading Program (CSLP) will be held from May 26 until June 2.
The program, which begins June 2, is open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade and will run every Tuesday and Thursday at the library. It will repeat Tuesday’s lessons on Wednesdays at the Jodie Wilson library.
This year’s theme is “Every Hero has a Story.” The program for this age group will run from June 2 to June 30.
“Most kids, no matter their age, like creepy, slimy or ‘super’ things,” said Barbara Goss, reading program organizer.
Each week, kids will be introduced to community heroes. On June 2 they will meet their first heroes — local firefighters — and others are being lined up for later.
“This is our opportunity to introduce the kids and the community to the library,” Goss said.
The library has stacks of superhero books, not just for the program. Graphic novels, comics and even novels are available for all levels of readers.
“Spiderman and Batman are our most popular ones at the library to check out,” Goss said.
Just as in previous years, there will be a grand prize drawing for the most avid reader.
Children will get records to keep track of their summer reading. For every five books they read, they get a sticker. For every sticker, they get to put their names in the drawing pot.
New this year is a weekly prize to be given to the student with the most books read that week, in addition to the stickers.
“With prizes and heroes, how could reading not be fun?” Goss said. “That’s what we want these kids to see.”
This program isn’t just reading. There will also be a few math and science lessons scheduled. Even a petting zoo is planned for June 25.
“When it comes to a summer program, the key is to keep changing things up,” Goss said. “We hope to keep them interested and involved with Spiderman’s help.”
The CSLP Teen Reading Program registration will start July 1. The program begins July 10. The theme is “Unmasked!”
