No doubt preparing for a race has its benefits, and slimming down is only one of them.
Residents at Beacon Harbor in Greenwood know how important it is to exercise, and preparing for the 300 Oaks Road Race is something they look forward to every year.
“I like getting ready for the race every year,” said resident Teresa Fitts. “When it’s really hot, we practice by walking up and down the halls inside. But on days when it’s cool outside, we go out and walk.”
Residents have been participating in the one-mile fun run route since the race began in the early 1980s. Fitts has been participating since 1994.
“We want the residents to participate in community outings because they’re a part of this community, too,” said Beacon Harbor manager Vickie Webb. “It’s a great way for them to socialize and it promotes their physical fitness. Each year they look forward to participating and doing their very best.”
Fourteen residents ranging from ages 22 to 62 will participate in this year’s race.
The residents don’t walk alone. Volunteers are right there with them every step of the way.
This year, volunteers from St. John’s United Methodist Church and volunteers from the Senior Select Program of the Delta Work Force will assist the residents.
Preparing for 300 Oaks is not a challenge to Beacon Harbor residents, and participating in the race is no more difficult for them than it is for anyone else.
“Everybody walks at his or her own pace based on ability,” Webb said. “And with a little help from the volunteers, they have no problem.”
And what do the residents look forward to the most about 300 Oaks?
“Trophies and medals!” Sherrye Walker said with a smile.
Every participant in the Fun Run receives a medal for participating. Walker, who has been a resident at Beacon Harbor for 20 years, has participated in the race many times. She said she is proud of every medal and trophy she has received.
The residents also look forward to the post-race party that takes place after everyone finishes the race. “It’s a lot of fun,” Walker said.
The 31st annual 300 Oaks Road Race will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday in downtown Greenwood.
