Greenwood high and middle school students who recently attended the Mississippi Council on Economic Education’s annual International Economic Summit (IES) at Mississippi College in Clinton came away with a number of awards at the event, including winning the summit’s debate.
The summit is a hands-on, activity-based learning program for high schools that teaches the significance and the basic concepts of globalization, international economics and what it takes to make highly interdependent nations competitive in today’s economic environment. The program includes a complete classroom curriculum plus a final activity in which students, divided into country teams, apply the concepts they have learned in a simulation of today’s global economy. These simulations involve import and export trading sessions, developing economic policies, debating real world issues, investing in long-term development projects, interacting with global economic institutions and seeking to stabilize and advance the global economy.
GHS won first place in the debate competition. Sophomore Jaylin Smith was the spokesperson for the debate team, which included Tija Johnson, Jokobe Brown, Brianna Purnell and Ja’Khylah White. The team represented the country of Afghanistan.
GMS students who received the Delta Champs Award for overall top country were Omkaar Chimma, Cassidy Washington, Raghavi Nallani, Dylan Williams and Nakaya Peoples. Their teacher representative was Dawn Davis, and they represented Japan.
GMS students, representing Spain, who received the Delta High Income Award were Laylia Strong, Lauryn Evans, Santara Houston, Ka’Pri Burden and Aaliyah Smith. Their teacher representative was Marques Johnson.
GHS students, representing Kenya, who won in the MCEE Best Costume Design were Abidemi Ayegbaroju, Jimesha Smith, Latavia Williams and Kymbria Thomas. Counselor Loria Gardner was their representative.
Middle school principal Chiqueta Daniels and high school Principal Dr. Lorita Harris each received a letter from Mississippi’s Institute of Higher Learning congratulating them on their students’ participation in the summit.
“As you are aware, the College Knowledge Project sponsors the annual participation of the IES student teams. Through their hard work and sincere dedication to learning global economics and financial literacy, your students were able to win the summit debate for IES. You should be extremely proud of how your students represented your schools and school district,” said IHL spokesperson Marsha Watson.
