The Heart of the South Girl Scout Troops 30093, grades 4-12, and 33150, grades K-3, took their annual Girl Scout trip. The group of 55 visited Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and Six Flags over Texas in Arlington, Texas.
“We had a ball, and it’s a true saying ‘everything is better in Texas’ including the sun,” said Deborah Harris, troop leader and service unit manager of Girl Scout Troop 30093.
The girls worked all year on community service projects and candy, cookie and bake sales to fund their annual summer trip.
“It teaches them how to have self ownership, management skills, people skills and, above all, teaches them to have fun with one another,” Harris said.
The girls are introduced to the summer vacation at the beginning of the season, and Harris says this incentive excites and motivates the girls.
By December, the Scouts pick the location they want to visit.
“They normally pick Six Flags at a different state each year,” Harris said. “Six Flags has amusement and water parks, so that’s why they pick that location.”
This year, the group of girls also toured a wax museum and saw figures of famous people like Micheal Jackson, the main characters from Harry Potter and the 8-foot, 11-inch tall figure of George Bell, one of the tallest men in America.
But Harris said that the girls’ favorite part of the trip was going back to the hotel and jumping in the pool.
“It was noisy, but they had fun and made new friends,” Harris said.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the South, 308 West Greenwood, will hold registration for its upcoming season on Aug. 24 at the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwood.
