The Greenwood Duplicate Bridge Club, an American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) sanctioned club, will host a fundraising event, “The Longest Day,” which will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Greenwood Duplicate Bridge Club will hold duplicate bridge games at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday. All bridge players are welcome to play, and no prior duplicate bridge experience is necessary to participate. Assistance with the procedure and mechanics of duplicate play will be available for new players. A donation of $5 is requested for play. All proceeds will benefit Alzheimer’s Association.
Not only is “The Longest Day” a fundraiser, it is also a daylong event that honors the strength, heart and endurance of those facing Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, said Liz Mounger, the Greenwood club’s manager.
“I think that the relationship between the ACBL and the Alzheimer’s Association is a perfect fit as studies do show that continuing to use one’s brain and memory in a game such as bridge, as well as the social aspects of bridge play, contribute to reduced levels of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as well as overall healthy aging,” said Mounger. “We want to invite the entire community to come play bridge. Participating doesn’t only benefit Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research, but it could impact your own future.”
The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care and research. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, provide and enhance care and support for all affected and reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to triple by 2050.
As a global partner of “The Longest Day,” the ACBL supports hundreds of bridge clubs across the country in raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease. In the last two years of partnership, bridge players have donated more than $1.8 million to the Alzheimer’s Association.
“The dedication by the American Contract Bridge League to ‘The Longest Day’ in communities across the country remains unwavering,” said Donna McCullough, vice president, of the Alzheimer's Association. “It is the support of ACBL and all those participating in ‘The Longest Day’ that will help change the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease for millions.”
