The Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market already drew more growers and vendors in its second week of operation, and organizers are hoping to see increased growth throughout the summer, according to market manager Tommy Miller.
The market is open from 8 a.m. until noon every Saturday morning beside the Senior Citizens Center at the corner of Howard and Johnson streets.
Some of the wares for sale last weekend included plants, preserves, bread, shrimp and various produce, such as blueberries, corn, green beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes and squash.
Spooney's Barbecue was even available on site for all the hungry shoppers.
"We're still looking for someone to supply us with eggs and someone local who sells honey," Miller said.
Donald Bender had a table set up to sell bread and other baked goods, and Miller said he would encourage others, including church groups and civic clubs, to come and sell more baked goods or cut flowers.
"I think that would go over real well," Miller said.
The fees are $5 for vendors who provide their own tables or pick-up trucks, or $10 to rent one of the market’s 10-foot-by-10-foot pop-up tents for the day.
Market organizers also have been selling merchandise to raise money for the Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market.
Items for sale include coffee and bottled water, T-shirts for $20, tote bags for $15, large posters for $5 and small posters for $2.
The farmers market also still needs volunteers to help out on Saturday mornings.
Full shifts are from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and half shifts are from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. or 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Volunteer duties include picking up the coffee supplies at The Alluvian, laying out tablecloths, helping the musicians set up, putting out the farmers market merchandise, selling the merchandise, assisting the growers and vendors, running errands, answering questions and packing up the tablecloths and merchandise.
