The Carroll County MSU Extension Service Office will offer a new pilot program, 4-H Sport Fishing Club.
The club will meet for the first time at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Extension office, located at 105 Washington St. in Carrollton.
Weekly meetings will follow on Thursday evenings during May.
“Carroll County boasts an abundance of natural resources with vast lands of woods, pastures, lakes and ponds,” said Tracy Robertson, a Carroll County Extension agent. “This makes our county a perfect getaway for any natural outdoor enthusiast.”
The Carroll County 4-H is partnering with an Extension agent from Northeast Mississippi to help present the new pilot program.
The 4-H Sport Fishing Club is open to anyone ages 5 to 18 who is interesting in learning about Mississippi’s outdoors.
The club will also help give children an advantage when venturing outdoors this spring and summer.
“Carroll County Extension will have guest speakers coming to bring you topics that will help get you started or improve on your existing fishing skills to make sure you hook your next catch,” said Robertson.
Specialists from around the area will discuss types of sport fish in Mississippi, fishing laws, the best type of fishing equipment, water safety, first aid and how to get that fly away hook out.
Once topics are covered, the club will go out and learn about cleaning and cooking fish.
Contests will also be held, such as fishing tournaments, cooking competitions and an upcoming fishing tournament in 2017 with the help of area fishermen.
