After a successful debut, the Episcopal Church of the Nativity is finalizing the preparations for its second annual invitational antique show.
The Antique Show & Sale, a three-day event, features high-end antiques from dealers throughout the Southeast.
The show will feature 16 booths, which will be filled with returning dealers as well as new faces keeping the show fresh and exciting in its second year.
Leading the organization for the event this year is Chairwoman, Linda Newell. Assisting her are co-Chairwomen Liz Mounger and Perry Smith and preview party Chairwoman Frances Knight.
“The dealers were very enthusiastic about coming back to Greenwood,” Newell said. “They loved the response they received from the community. There was such a variety of goods. The dealers were excited that people had interest in a little bit of everything, whether it was antique books, linens or silver.”
To get an idea of the items the dealers will bring this year, Newell mentioned some of the antiques from last year.
The antique dealer La Maison d’ Elodie of Pensacola, Fla., had a booth of an eclectic collection of antiques like costume jewelry, vintage Hermes scarves and antique silver loving cups that had been transformed into lamps.
Other items sold at the show last year were antique children’s books and metal toy soldiers.
New items this year will include larger pieces of American and English furniture from two new dealers.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” Newell said. “What’s so great about our show is we have a variety of antiques. You can come and find your interest and see what to add to your collection.”
Every item at the show and sale is an authentic antique; nothing is new or reproduced.
The event begins Thursday with a preview party, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The preview party will be an evening filled with food, wine, antiques and music. Thursday guests will indulge in foods like tenderloin, shrimp and various desserts prepared by the church’s cooks. The food and beverages will be set up in five different stations throughout the show.
While browsing through the antique merchandise, guests will hear the melodies of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity’s organist David Williamson playing the piano.
Friday and Saturday the Antique Show & Sale will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will last until 5:30 p.m. A lunch, which can be purchased for $10, will be provided both days by Grapevine Catering.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity’s Day School and to its outreach committee.
Last year, enough money was raised to provide the Day School with much-needed equipment, and the outreach community was able to purchase school uniforms for children at a local public elementary school.
Newell hopes the money raised from the event will assist again in giving back to the Day School and community.
Also, last year, $2,500 in sales tax was returned to the city of Greenwood.
This allowed the event to maintain sponsorship from the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau and receive a grant for advertising.
There will be door prizes each day, which will include pottery by Henry Flautt, an “Eat Drink Delta” book and an item from The Mississippi Gift Company.
The church, located on historic Howard Street, will host the event in its parish hall.
“After we built our new parish hall, it was so nice and spacious. We wanted to find ways to use it,” Newell said.
Tickets for the preview party are $40 and include a two-day pass.
General admission tickets for Friday or Saturday are $7.
Tickets are available at Fincher’s Antiques or Smith & Co. or by calling 453-7786 or 299-3277 .
“I have always liked antiques,” Newell said. “It’s fun to learn about the history of what might have been, if you have a piece of history and learning who might have used it in the past.”
