The B.B. King All-Stars Choir was one of nine choirs from across the United States selected to participate in the 15th annual Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans.
The choir performed from June 27 to July 1.
The All-Stars are comprised of singers chosen by audition from Leflore, Bolivar and Sunflower counties, including Greenwood soprano Kurtina Coates. The singers traveled by motor coach to the festival with their director, Greenwood resident Dr. Cheryl Weiss; their pianist, Dr. Robin Webb; and eight chaperones, including Brenda Coates of Greenwood.
They stayed at and rehearsed in the Loew’s New Orleans Hotel. At the final festival concert on June 30th at St. Louis Cathedral, the All-Stars Choir sang a solo piece, “Turn the World Around”, as well as eight other pieces in a mass chorus of 300 youth singers conducted by nationally renowned conductors Cheryl DuPont and Dr. Sandra Snow.
In addition, the All-Stars were the guest choral group singing at the Trinity Episcopal Church’s Sunday morning service on June 29, where they performed three selections.
Along with their musical activities, the singers enjoyed a river boat dinner dance cruise, a trip to the New Orleans Aquarium, an evening of dancing and bowling at Fulton Alley, meals at several restaurants and sightseeing.
