Pillow Academy will hold its Summer Drama Workshop next week at the Craig Performing Arts Center on campus.
The workshop, to be held from Monday through July 1, will last from 1 to 5 p.m. each day and is open to children ages 4 to 12.
Participants can enjoy theater games, stage movement direction, sword instruction, T-shirt painting and other craft activities.
Cathy Roberts, the school’s drama director, said workshops like this are a passion of hers. “I’m very fired up about doing this,” she said.
Each day of the workshop, participants will practice one of Roberts’ own productions, “Under the Big Top.” The children will perform the play on the final day at 4 p.m.
The play is circus themed and is a “wonderful piece for children,” Roberts said. Because it’s her own work, she can tweak the play according to how many children show up.
“I can add more lion trainers, acrobats, clowns, really anything I need to,” she said.
All members of the play’s production crew will also have parts as clowns. “We’ll be on stage and can keep things moving if the kids forget their lines,” Roberts said.
The workshop is meant to be an enjoyable experience for the kids, but Roberts said she doesn’t want anyone to think things will be disorganized.
“It won’t just be painting construction paper — although of course we can do that if that’s what my kids want to do,” she said. “We’re going to get some good theater practice in.”
Roberts’ two daughters will be at the workshop to help facilitate. Roberts’ oldest daughter teaches choreography, and her other daughter studied the art of sword wielding at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Roberts said she doesn’t do pre-registration so she has no idea how many children she will have this summer. Registration begins Monday at 12:30 p.m., and there is a $100 registration fee.
