The Museum of the Mississippi Delta, formerly known and still affectionately referred to as Cottonlandia, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Founded by a group of people interested in stimulating interest in and appreciation of the history and archaeology of Leflore and Carroll counties and the state of Mississippi, Cottonlandia Educational and Recreational Foundation was incorporated on Oct. 10, 1969.
For the past 50 years, under the direction of a board of directors and executive directors, staff and volunteers, the museum continues to strive for excellence.
On Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., a celebratory anniversary party will take place to which the public is invited.
You will enjoy a variety of specialty appetizers, dessert and beverages. Tickets for the 50th anniversary party are $50 per couple, and individual tickets are $25 each.
By purchasing a ticket to the 50th anniversary party, you won’t just be attending another fabulous event. From your donation, the museum will be able to continue to work on maintaining and interpreting the thousands of objects in its historical, archaeological and art collections.
Numerous people were involved in the formation of this museum. Names such as L.B. Jones, Jim Snyder, Otis Allen, Granville Martin and others gathered artifacts from Native American sites or from cotton farmers and relatives of Greenwood Leflore and later added artwork and built a museum dedicated to the art, history and science of the Mississippi Delta.
There are so many stories to tell about the people and events of this region, and we want to hear from you. Go to the Museum of the Mississippi Delta’s Facebook page and type in a memory of the museum that you have as an adult or a child.
Now that November is here, it’s time to start planning for our 10th annual Festival of Trees. Each year, nearly 25 organizations, garden clubs or businesses decorate a tree provided by the museum. Please call or email Kaye Schroeder at education@museumofthemississippidelta.com to sign up. Decorating trees will begin Nov. 20, and the exhibit will open the day after Thanksgiving.
