Happy Columbus Day! We’re enjoying the holiday off today, but we’ve got a busy week ahead.
This week, we’ll celebrate the opening of two brand new businesses in town with back-to-back ribbon cuttings.
On Wednesday at 10 a.m., we’ll join the newly opened Greenwood Drugs, located at 400 W. Park Ave., for its grand opening. We’ll welcome Lisa Smith as a new business owner and see the renovations they have done to make this new business possible.
On Thursday at 10 a.m., we’ll make our way out to Cannon Motors to celebrate a ribbon cutting. This is located across U.S. 82 from the existing Cannon Chevrolet and Nissan dealership.
Whether it’s a brand new business or an expansion of an existing one, we are always grateful when folks make an investment in Greenwood and Leflore County.
New businesses are a sign of growth, and we like to think that Greenwood continues to grow and expand.
Also this week is homecoming week for Mississippi Valley State University, as well as the very special inauguration of Valley’s president Dr. William Bynum Jr. That event is set for 2 p.m. on Friday. Lots of activities are happening this week on the MVSU campus, so be sure to check out their website for a complete list of the schedule and how you can be involved. The Web address is www.mvsu.edu/homecoming/.
We’ll also be welcoming lots of MVSU friends, family, fans and alumni to town this week for the activities, and we’ll be busy putting up welcome posters around town in our area retail stores, restaurants and gas stations.
We want all of our Valley friends and family to feel welcome this week.
Another very special event you will want to put on your calendar is for Oct. 30. This is the 100th Anniversary Celebration and Business After Hours at our very own Greenwood-Leflore Public Library downtown on West Washington Street.
It’s hard to believe that our library is 100 years old, and they’ve got a special celebration planned from 5-6:30 p.m. that evening. The public is invited to attend this event, and you can visit and tour the library, get yourself a library card or renew your old one and learn more about one of our greatest resources that encourages people to read and learn.
Also, don’t forget our AgFest event set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at the Leflore County Civic Center. We have tickets for sale now at the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, or you can purchase them at Wade Inc. Adult tickets are only $10, and tickets for kids under 12 are only $5. This is going to be another great event. Where else can you bring the kids for fun and games, eat a catfish dinner, visit expo booths, hear from Gary Adams with the National Cotton Council and enjoy live bluegrass for such a bargain? We’ll recognize our Young Farmer of the Year. Between 6-7 p.m., you can come out and meet Matt Wyatt and Richard Cross from the Supertalk Head to Head Radio Show. They’ll be broadcasting live from 3-6 p.m. at the Civic Center. Since the Egg Bowl is the very next week, I feel quite sure they’ll be talking a little football.
Y’all come out and join us for AgFest!
