We're fast approaching election day on Nov. 8, and we have quite a few hotly contested races in our city and county.
We think the public should have a chance to be educated on these offices and get to know the candidates a little better, so we're hosting a Candidates Forum next Tuesday, Oct. 25, atthe Leflore County Civic Center. It will begin at 6 p.m.
This will be a great chance to meet the candidates and hear briefly from each one of them on why they think they are the best person for the office they are seeking.
The event is free, and we encourage the public to come out and hear from these candidates.
Please come and bring your family, friends and neighbors.
So far, we've had confirmations from the following candidates: Keith Chapman (Supervisor, District 2); Mary Rice-Roberson (Leflore County Circuit Clerk); Elmus Stockstill (Leflore County Circuit Clerk); Andrew McQueen (Constable, Southern District); Sara Kenwright (Leflore County Tax Collector); Viola Williams (Leflore County School Superintendent); Robert Collins (Supervisor, District 5); Demetrice Bedell (Sheriff); David Jordan (State Senate); Carlos Moore (State Senate); Lydia Chassaniol (State Senate); Dwight McClee (Supervisor, District 2) and Ricky Banks (sheriff.)
We hope to have all of the candidates make an appearance next Tuesday at the forum.
If you are a local candidate running for office in Leflore County and have not responded, please let us know if you plan to attend. You can call the Chamber at 453-4152.
We are looking forward to a very informative evening of getting to know our candidates. It is our hope that the general public will see the value of this forum and attend. It is a priviledge to be able to vote, so we should all be educated on who's running for office and who will be representing us.
If you have questions about the forum, please feel free to call the Chamber at 453-4152. We hope to see you all on Oct. 25, at the Civic Center.
On another note, mark your calendar for Thursday, Nov. 3. We'll join the folks out at Cannon Cadillac-Chevrolet-Nissan for Business After Hours. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 6:30 p.m.
This should be a great event. Chamber members and their guests are invited to attend.
Last, but certainly not least, we began our Fall Membership Campaign last week, so folks will be out and about recruiting new Chamber members. You may be called on to join, so please give it your consideration.
There are many great reasons and benefits of being a Chamber member, so now's a great time to join. If you've been thinking about it but just have not committed yet, please give it some thought. It's a great investment for you and for your community.
