Summer is upon us, and we’re not letting up here at the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce!
Our annual Stars & Stripes Festival is coming up on June 26, and we’re sending out letters this week asking for community support for this wonderful event.
As always, we’ll have this event at the arboretum between the two downtown bridges.
I want to point out that this event is free to the community (with the exception of any food you may purchase or the $5 armbands for the kids inflatables). How is this possible? It’s all because of the generosity of our business community.
Each year, we ask for donations to cover the expenses of this event, and we have so many folks who step up and give. It’s truly a blessing to be able to offer events to the community such as this.
This event in particular is so great because it really does bring the entire community together regardless of race, age, denomination or whatever. We all put our differences aside and just come out for a night of fun and togetherness.
That’s what community is all about.
We’ve got an exciting lineup for this year’s event. Here’s the schedule:
• 6 p.m.: Park opens
• 6:30 p.m.: Live entertainment by Meet the Press, a fantastic band out of Jackson (named one of the top 150 party bands in the USA)
• 7 p.m.: Boat parade on the Yazoo River
• 7:30 p.m.: Veterans tribute and flyover
• 8 p.m.: Live entertainment by Meet the Press continues
• 9 p.m.: Fireworks extravaganza from the Veterans Bridge
We’ll have lots of food vendors or you can bring your own picnic basket. The splash pad for the kids, inflatables, arts and crafts activities for kids and more will be available.
As for our boat parade, we really want to encourage everyone who may have a boat to participate in this. We encourage you to decorate your boat — in red, white and blue of course — and get into the spirit of the event. We’ll give prizes for the top two decorated boats.
Call us at the chamber, 453-4152, to register your boat for the boat parade.
The event will be here before you know it. So go ahead and mark your calendar and make plans to attend. It promises, as always, to be a fun summer evening that’s suited for the entire family.
If you’d like to make a contribution to this event, please send your donation to Chamber Stars and Stripes Festival, P.O. Box 848, Greenwood, MS, 38935.
Our Microsoft Office computer classes start at the Mississippi Delta Community College Greenwood Center on Tuesday. If you are still needing to sign up, it’s not too late. If you’re in need of Word, Power Point or Excel, these classes will be available for you. The cost is $10 per class for chamber members or employees and $15 per class for non-members. Call the chamber as soon as possible to find out the schedule and to get signed up. Payment must be made in advance, cash or check only.
And we’re gearing up for our Social Media workshop on Tuesday here at the chamber. It begins at 11:30 a.m., and we do still have a few seats left. A box lunch is included in the cost, but you need to let us know if you want to attend. If you have a business that is engaged in social media or even if you’re an individual wanting to learn more about it, this workshop is for you. Topics that will be covered include are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
Social media is the future of business, and it’s here now. So you need to be on top of these topics and learn all you can.
Hope to see you around town!
