On Saturday, Oct. 13, Robert and Katherine Barner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
The couple exchanged vows on Sunday, Oct. 13, 1968, at St. Peter Church of Christ Holiness in Hazlehurst.
Both Robert and Katherine graduated from Parish High School in Hazlehurst, Utica Junior College, Mississippi Vocational College (now Mississippi Valley State University) and Jackson State University.
The Barners have been residents of Itta Bena for nearly 50 years. Before retiring, Mrs. Barner taught for 40 years in the Leflore County School District; while Mr. Barner worked at Mississippi Valley State University and the Leflore County School District.
The Barners have three children: Samuel (Yalanda) Barner of Clinton, Katisha (Alton) Sutton of Terry and La’Kristie Barner of Itta Bena and three grandchildren — Brandon, Benjamin and Katia.
In their spare time, the Barners enjoy gardening, traveling, cruising and serving in various capacities at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and with the Les Douze Femme Elite Women’s Club.
The Barners’ children are honoring their parents with a “50th Anniversary Celebration” today at New Bethel Church in Itta Bena.
