Editor, Commonwealth:
There are so many people walking around who don’t know they have diabetes. At 69, it showed up in my blood test.
I couldn’t believe it. I felt great, had never been sick, was energetic. I had lost 40 pounds by power walking. Still it came.
At age 71, I take a pill for the disease. No shots, at least not yet. No blood-sugar sticks either.
It’s hard to change your eating habits when for years and years you could pig out on all the foods you like. Eating food is one of life’s pleasures. Lemon pies, hamburger and fries, sweet rolls, cookies, hot dogs, Moon Pies, potato chips and dip, and ice cream. It’s all bad for you.
My dad, who lived in Washington state, had diabetes. He lost one leg to this disease. I call it the silent killer.
With all this new technology, perhaps some day in the future there will be a cure for diabetes. Wouldn’t that be a miracle, a blessing from the good Lord up above?
