Fort Pemberton
Regarding the article (“Monument to go to Ft. Pemberton,” Sept. 28):
I don’t agree that the Confederate Memorial Monument needs to be moved at all, but I’m glad to see it’s being moved to Fort Pemberton. Maybe now Fort Pemberton will get the respect and notice as a historical site it deserves.
The battle that occurred there on the Tallahatchie River in 1863, a decisive Confederate victory, was the only real battle of the Civil War that took place in the Mississippi Delta. For three days, Confederate cannons and sharp shooters inflicted heavy casualties on Union forces, causing General Grant to have to find another way into the Mississippi River to get to Vicksburg, which he then destroyed, also burning Jackson to the ground along the way.
The steamship Star of the West, which Confederates had captured and sunk in the middle of the river to block Union gunboats, was also the ship upon which the first shots of the Civil War were thought to have been fired, when it was a Union vessel moored in the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina.
Fort Pemberton, especially with the memorial monument, should be touted among and promoted as one of Greenwood’s tourist attractions.

School closures
Regarding the article “Some criticize handling of school closures” (Sept. 25):
I agree with the teachers. The other two high schools have been treated differently since the consolidation.
Greenwood High has always been treated as the bright child, and the other two were treated as “stepchildren.” How can you cut short the quarantine days just to play a game on Friday night? It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.
Parents from Elzy and Leflore need to wake up. Or is the athletic director/head football coach in charge of the district?
Greenwood hospital
Regarding the article “Hospital CEO confident in turnaround plan” (Sept. 29):
Why can’t the hospital recruit a dermatologist? There is no longer one in Grenada. The closest dermatologist is in Greenville.
I realize this is easier said than done, but if we could just get one for two or three days a week?
