Editor, Commonwealth:
I read your editorial a few weeks ago titled, “Mississippi has made its bed” (Sept. 24).
I cannot tell you how much I agree with you. What do you think is at the crux of it? Is it just ignorance on the part of the citizenry, racism, or what?
What I find so ironic about this and other social issues here is that Mississippians are regarded as some of the most “religious” in the nation, but when you compare their politics, it is anything but Christian. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere between the heart and the psyche of the average Mississippian. I think this might fall into the category of hypocrisy.
As a result, we suffer at our own hands, over and over again. It is so exhausting. That could also be why we are some of the most depressed people in the nation.
Thank you for your truthful and straightforward article. Please keep them coming!
