Leflore County High School will begin its new year with a freshly paved parking lot and other areas.
Leflore County District 4 Supervisor Eric Mitchell said the campus had not been repaved in 20 years.
The project should be finished by the end of this week, he added. “The (school) district provides the material, and we provide the labor.”
The improvements are “a win for the community,” Mitchell said. “The kids, faculty and staff will have something to look forward to as they begin the new year.”
Taxpayers have recently funded paving projects for streets in the Rising Sun community, Mitchell said.
The county is also involved in other projects in District 4. One, done in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, involves renovations at Blue Lake near Itta Bena.
Mitchell said the county is looking to install multiple boat ramps and potentially a fishing pier and clean the lake up for recreational use.
In another project, the plan is to install figure-8 tracking at Sunflower Park.
Mitchell said this would provide an exercise opportunity for parents who are already at the park while their kids play ball.
Also being discussed is a plan to repave the parking lot, install handicapped accessible bathrooms, and renovate the baseball field, he said.
