At least 122 students and one staff member at schools throughout Carroll and Leflore counties had to quarantine last week after exposure to COVID-19, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health’s latest aggregate school COVID-19 report, released this week.
Additionally, at least four students at these schools tested positive for COVID-19 during the week of Sept. 27 to Oct. 1, according to the report, making it the lowest number of area students to test positive since the start of this fall semester.
No staff members have been reported to test positive the prior week, also a first for this semester, according to the state Department of Health’s past school COVID-19 reports.
Greenwood High School reported that 69 students were quarantined after exposure last week, the highest number for the area schools that submitted their COVID-19 data.
It was also the only school in which a staff member had to be quarantined due to exposure.
The numbers for Carroll and Leflore counties do not represent a full accounting for all students and staff members.
Four private schools — Carroll Academy, Delta Streets Academy, Leflore Christian School and Pillow Academy — have not had their COVID-19 numbers appear in any of the state Department of Health’s reports since the beginning of this semester, including the most recent report.
St. Francis of Assisi School, which typically has its data reported in past weeks, also did not appear in this week’s report.
All Mississippi K-12 schools, both public and private, are required to report their COVID-19 data as mandated by an order issued by Dr. Thomas Dobbs, the state’s health officer, in August of last year.
