Pillow Academy’s Lady Mustangs will go into the North State 5A Tournament as the top seed from District 1 after defeating Heritage Academy 50-30 Saturday at Bayou Academy in Cleveland.
Pillow (22-5), winners of 12 straight, will play East Rankin Academy in the first round at Simpson Academy, site of North State. The Lady Mustangs beat ERA twice during the regular season.
Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Pillow, which knocked off Starkville in the semifinals Friday, took control early as it led 15-5 after the first frame over the Lady Patriots,who beat Bayou in the semis Friday.
The Lady Mustangs, who got a game-high 14 points from Elise Howard, were outscored 13-11 in the second frame and led 26-18 at the break. Pillow led 37-23 after the third frame and outscored Heritage 13-7 in the fourth period.
Elise Howard tacked on four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Alanna Hodo had 12 points, three steals and three boards.
Avery Howard chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists, and Karle Aldridge had five points and three rebounds. Millie Moses also had five points and grabbed two rebounds, and Lola Harris had four points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists.
Both Howard girls, Aldridge and Hodo were named to the All-Tournament team.
-Carroll Academy: The Lady Rebels secured the No. 3 seed from District 2 with a 30-24 victory over Indianola Academy in the consolation game of the district tournament Saturday at Winona Christian School.
Carroll (11-11) will find out who it will play at the North State 4A Tournament after the completion of the District 1 Tournament Monday. It was delayed because of this past week’s wintry weather.
The Lady Rebels held a 9-3 lead after the first quarter, but IA pulled to within one at 11-10 by halftime. An 11-4 run in the third frame gave CA a 22-14 advantage headed to the fourth period.
Anna Laken Taylor led Carroll with 14 points. Bella Carter chipped in eight, and Meri Brynn Reeves had six.
In the boys contest, Carroll also played Indianola in the consolation game, dropping a 46-44 decision to the Colonels. IA led 12-9 after one and 24-21 at the half, however, Carroll went in front 34-32 headed to the fourth.
Noah Beck had 17 points, and Mathis Beck contributed 13 for the Rebels (13-7). Landon Grantham had seven points, and Nathan Matthews had five.
Carroll lost 58-37 to Greenville St. Joe in the semifinals on Friday. The Irish led 19-5 after one, 32-18 at the half and 49-25 after the third.
Noah Beck had 20, and Collin Hurst and Cohen Blaylock had six each.
Carroll heads to the North 4A Tournament, which will be held at Clarksdale Lee Academy, as the No. 4 seed from District 2.
-Delta Streets Academy: The Lions dropped a 65-38 decision to Greenville Christian School in the championship game of the District 3-3A Tournament Saturday at Benton Academy.
Delta Streets (12-17) got 15 points from Dameon Sanders, and eight each from Kamron Hurt and Malique Davenport.
The Lions played Newton County Academy Monday in the first round of the North 3A Tournament at Kemper Academy. If they beat Newton, they play Wednesday.
