Parents of test-takers in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District are invited to an informational session on online tutoring Wednesday evening.
The district’s director of curriculum, Mary Johnson, said the hourlong session, set to begin at 5 p.m. in Greenwood High School’s auditorium, will educate parents on Paper tutoring.
“It’s just an awesome program. I know the kids will benefit from it,” she said.
Johnson said at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Mississippi Department of Education realized students needed a virtual component for tutoring and supplemental aid because they couldn’t attend in-person sessions.MDE implemented Paper tutoring to keep the achievement gap — that space between where a child is academically and where he or she ideally should be — as small as possible.
Paper tutoring provides 24/7 year-round live tutoring for students in grades 3-12 in English language arts and mathematics.
Johnson said the program also helps students develop strategies that help encourage higher achievement on state tests.
Wednesday’s presentation will feature a Paper representative as well as students from the district to demonstrate how Paper works and answer any questions.
Johnson said parents will benefit from the program because it will allow more downtime at home.
“It allows the student to be taught in their area of weakness, and once they’ve learned, the parents won’t have to sit there with them every weekend working on homework,” she said.
Because the tutors are live, students can ask questions and receive immediate help. Students “are led to the answer rather than just given the answer,” she said.
For parents and other caretakers unable to attend Wednesday’s information session, Johnson said the session will be recorded and posted on the district’s website, glcsd.org, where there will also be a link to more information.
