Editor, Commonwealth:
Once upon a time in Mississippi, automobile insurance was not mandated. I went for years and years, as did so many drivers before me, carrying a rabbit’s foot for good luck. Never was I in an accident. I had a perfect driving record.
Now times have changed, and having automobile insurance is the law of the land.
How is it that so many drivers slide through the cracks, not having diddly-squat for insurance? Good-time Charlie, not a worry in the world, driving on our roads, taking a chance.
I have to have insurance, and I do pay each month. I carry an insurance card in my wallet to show to law enforcement as proof of insurance, all paid in full. Why is it so many drivers never get caught driving our streets and highways without insurance? The percentage must be mind-boggling.
I have a brainstorm. Increase the fine to $5,000 and a week in the jailhouse plus community service. No proof of insurance? Handcuff these morons. You break the law, you do the time. The drivers nowadays are fools not to have automobile insurance.
I do believe that some other states, such as Washington state, have stricter laws. Automobile insurance is a must-have without any excuses. Buy it, or ride a bicycle or walk.
Some folks are responsible and do pay each month or whenever the premium is due.
