The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board swore in newly elected Ward 3 representative Henry Fant Jr. during its most recent work session.
“We just want to let you know, Mr. Fant, that you are now part of one of the greatest districts in the Mississippi Delta region, and with your help, we are going to get things done,” said Dr. Kalanya Moore, who represents Ward 2 and serves as the board’s vice president and secretary.
Samantha Milton, who was defeated by Fant in a runoff in November, had been serving as board president. Her term ended Dec. 31.
The board likely will elect new officers when it holds its next regular meeting Tuesday.
The board’s attorney, Kelvin Pulley, administered the oath not only to Fant but also to Moore, who was reelected for a new term without opposition. She was first elected in 2018.
During Thursday’s session, Moore addressed the ongoing issue of consolidation within the district.
She asked the board to “seriously consider the closure of some buildings over the summer.”
Superintendent James Johnson-Waldington said, “We are working right now on giving you all what it is you asked for as far as the confederation of the schools.”
“I have different departments that are doing research on certain things, and once we get that information in, you’ll get that recommendation from me based on what’s the best interest of the children, district and our whole community,” he said.
Dr. Ro’Shaun Bailey, District 4’s board member, asked Johnson-Waldington to provide the board Tuesday with some talking points regarding a school bond issue.
The board also:
- Noted that there will be discussion Tuesday of a class action lawsuit the board agreed to enter two years ago regarding the harmful effects of vaping.
- Discussed the disposal of obsolete textbooks.
- Held a closed session but did not announce a reason for doing so.
