The Amanda Elzy boys and girls basketball teams opened their 2022-2023 seasons with a pair of wins against cross-county rival Leflore County Monday.
The two games were played at Greenwood High’s gym because work is being done on Elzy’s gymnasium.
The Panthers outscored the Tigers 7-6 in overtime to prevail 53-52. Leflore led 11-7 after one, and Elzy held a slim 24-23 advantage at the half. The Tigers went back in front 33-30 after the third. The game was tied at 46-46 at the end of regulation.
Jacoreyun Miller led Elzy with 15 points, and Keithrick Parker had 11 points. Perveontah Stancil tacked on 10 points, and Reginald Moore had seven points.
For Leflore, Jamerian Seals led the way with 18 points. Keveunte Parker tallied 17 points, and Ladarian Pleasant had 10 points.
In the girls game, Elzy came out on top 31-20 as it led 9-3 after one, 15-9 at the half and 22-12 after the third.
Olivia Wilson led Elzy with nine points, and Zoreya Beckworth and Alexis Doss had five points each.
Jakyrra Sandifer led Leflore with nine points and two rebounds, and one steal and one block.
Antionette Houston had four points and three boards, and Jameshia Kyles had four points, two rebounds and two steals.
Ja’kiaya Thomas had three points and three steals.
Elzy is at Greenville Thursday, and Leflore County is slated to visit M.S. Palmer.
-Delta Streets Academy: The Lions opened their season on the road in Greenville as they fell to Washington School 45-25 Monday.
Malique Davenport led DSA with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Kamron Hurt tacked on 10 points and three assists.
In the junior varsity game, Delta Streets won 28-11 as Jordan Meeks had 12 points and BJ McGhee nine.
Delta Streets, which played at St. Aloysius Tuesday, is at Riverside Friday.
