Ruling on special election date likely soon

Leflore County voters should soon know more about whether the county’s special elections set for April 16 will be rescheduled.
Circuit Judge Margaret Carey-McCray on Thursday heard Chancery Clerk Johnny Gary Jr.’s request for an injunction to delay the special election in which he is scheduled to face Debra Hibbler.

Republican voters will head back to the polls Tuesday to decide who will face U.S. Rep. Bennie G. Thompson in November’s general election.
Neither Ron Eller nor Andrew Scott Smith reached the 50%-plus-one majority in the March 12 primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

Mitchell appeals order for new election

Eric Mitchell, District 4’s Leflore County supervisor, is appealing the Feb. 22 judgment by a specially appointed judge that is forcing him to run for reelection in a special election slated for April 16.
Mitchell’s appeal was filed in Leflore County Circuit Court on Monday, the last day on which it could be entered.
