Activist seeking Ward 5 seat

A community activist and founder of an anti-gun-violence group is making another run at a Greenwood City Council seat.
Lavoris Weathers, 58, submitted his qualifying papers Thursday. He is running as an independent for the Ward 5 seat, currently held by Andrew Powell. Weathers unsuccessfully challenged Powell four years ago.

Two Greenwood City Council incumbents have submitted qualifying papers to run for reelection.
Ward 3’s Ronnie Stevenson, the council’s president, submitted his papers Tuesday, and Ward 7’s Carl Palmer submitted his papers on Jan. 17.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
