Excessive pre-trial detention is a blight on Mississippi and its criminal justice system. Thousands of Mississippians are being held in jail awaiting trial because they can’t afford bail. Recent changes have improved the situation. Pre-trial detention is down 25% in recent years, but there is still a long way to go.
