When the majority on the Leflore County Board of Supervisors last week decided to make Johnny Gary Jr. the interim circuit clerk, it ignored both the people’s will and Gary’s poor performance as chancery clerk and county administrator.

Look to future, not the past

A congressman from Florida who is Black and Republican made news on May 4 when he said Black families were stronger before the arrival of welfare and other Great Society government programs in the 1960s. Unfortunately, he used the worst possible terminology when trying to make this point.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
