When COVID-19 arrived on the scene two and a half years ago, some expected it would be like the Spanish flu of a century earlier — a wicked killer that would as quickly disappear as it arrived.
It doesn’t look as if that’s going to be the case.
The experts are increasingly saying to get used to COVID-19. It might not be as deadly as at first, thanks to vaccinations and acquired immunity, plus the medical community’s rapidly growing knowledge of how to best treat those who get seriously ill from the virus. But it could be around for a while, killing as many annually in this country as a really bad year of the flu.
We can, though, reduce the risk the same way that we improve our chances against the flu. By getting an annual shot.
The latest update on the booster shot is just becoming available. It would be wise to get one.
