County Road 350 has become a dumping ground for tires — and residents and county officials are fed up.
Tuesday was the “third or fourth time” the Leflore County Solid Waste Department has been called to remove tires from the area, according to its director, Gary Lofton.
Lofton was on hand to direct his workers to claim the tires, but it wasn’t easy.
County Road 350 is located just north of the Yalobusha River. The entrance is an unmarked dirt road off Mississippi 7. Tires and other trash are littered on the sides of the road for more than a mile.
Many tires were tossed well into the creek near Hadley Lake. Lofton said that the ground isn’t stable and a worker walking to retrieve the tires would run risk of falling into the water.
“We’re going to bring a machine here. Get the machine walked down there, push (the tires) up close to the road here. While they do that, we’ll grab them up,” Lofton said.
Jamie Bassie, who lives about a mile from where the dumping is occurring, called it “an eyesore” and compared what is happening to someone dumping trash on his driveway.
“Something needs to be done,” he said. “This needs to stop. Greenwood’s a pretty town. It doesn’t need to be trashed up because someone don’t care.”
He said a neighbor spotted someone dumping tires on the road and wrote down the person’s license plate number. The license plate number was attached to an address in Carroll County.
He said that he plans to file a report with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.
“I’d like to see somebody get prosecuted,” Bassie said. “They need to stop people from doing this.”
