The Lions of Delta Streets Academy claimed a 58-45 win over Newton County Academy in the first round of the North State 3A Tournament Monday night at Kemper Academy in DeKalb.
The Lions (13-17) will play District 1 No. 1 seed Tunica Academy Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. the quarterfinals. Tunica beat Lee Academy (Ark.) Monday in the District 1 championship game.
DSA trailed 12-8 to Newton after the first period but turned up the heat in the second frame to lead 20-16 at the half. An 18-12 run in the third gave the Lions a 38-28 advantage headed to the fourth period.
Kamron Hurt tallied 20 points for DSA, and Dameon Sanders had 19 points and eight rebounds. Kamarion Watson had eight points.
A win Wednesday and Delta Streets will play in the semifinals Friday at 6:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games are Saturday at 4:45 and 6 p.m. The top four teams advance to the MAIS State 3A Tournament next week.
-Greenwood High: The Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the Region 3-4A Tournament as Senatobia posted a 65-15 win Monday night at Yazoo City High School.
Senatobia, which played Tuesday against Clarksdale in the semifinals, led 19-3 after one and 41-3 at the half.
Angel Pilcher led Greenwood (3-22) with six points and two rebounds. Kaley Williams had five points, and Ya’Kyla Stasher had five rebounds.
-Region 3-3A: The Region 3-3A Tournament started Monday night at Greenwood High School.
The Humphreys County girls beat Ruleville 56-40 and will play Yazoo County Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Winona boys got past Yazoo County 46-31 and will take on Ruleville at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Amanda Elzy girls and boys play Wednesday as the Lady Panthers take on Winona at 7 p.m., and the Panthers do battle with Humphreys County at 8:30 p.m.
The consolation and championship games are slated for Friday at GHS. The action gets started at 4 p.m. The top four teams advance to the State 3A Tournament next week.
-Carroll Academy: The Rebels and Lady Rebels found out their opponents for the North State 4A Tournament late Monday.
The Rebels, the 2 No. 4 seed, will play District 1 No. 1 Rossville Academy Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at Lee Academy in Clarksdale. The winner moves on to the semifinals Friday at 7:45 p.m. to take on the Winona Christian-Lee survivor. The loser is done for the season.
The boys consolation and championship games are Saturday at 4 and 5:15 p.m.
The Lady Rebels, the District 2 No. 3 seed, play Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Kirk Academy, the District 1 No. 2 seed. The winner will play Friday at 4 p.m. against the Winona Christian-Marshall victor.
The girls consolation and championship games are Saturday at 1 and 2:15 p.m.
The top four teams in each bracket advance to the State 4A Tournament next week.
