A local organization is working with a national nonprofit to provide wreaths to the families of fallen veterans next month.
Minnie Parham, a member of the Chakchiuma Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, said the chapter is working with Wreaths Across America for the first time this year.
Orders for wreaths must be turned in by Thursday.
In the past, the DAR has organized other memorial efforts, such as having 50 flags placed on U.S. 82 and Mississippi 7.
“We’ve gotten encouraging things from (Wreaths Across America) to do this, participate in this, for several years,” she said. “This is the first year that we have attempted to do this.”
Wreaths Across America, based in Columbia Falls, Maine, contributed to the laying of more than 2 million wreaths in 2021.
This year, the organization’s National Wreaths Across America Day is scheduled for Dec. 17.
Parham said order forms for wreaths may be picked up at North Greenwood Baptist Church or Greenwood Market Place. Each form must be returned with a $15 check written out to the DAR chapter.
She said the chapter will order the wreaths, which will arrive in time to be distributed Dec. 17.
A short memorial service is being scheduled for that day, though the location has not been selected yet, she said.
“It’s another matter of showing respect and appreciation for our veterans, for those who died,” she said. “I have five in my family. It’s very, very significant. It’s recognizing the sacrifice that the person made and the family made.”
