Police struggle to hire officers

Greenwood Police Chief Terrence Craft says his department is about 23 officers short and is doing its best to find and keep new recruits.
“We are short-staffed, no doubt,” he told the Greenwood Voters League on Wednesday. “Just like every other agency in the U.S. right now. It’s just hard finding police officers, to be honest.”

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
