Mayor: Shootings can't be tolerated

Residents of Greenwood “cannot tolerate” any more shooting crimes, says Mayor Carolyn McAdams.
McAdams spoke about the problem of shootings at Tuesday’s meeting of the Greenwood City Council. She was disturbed about Saturday’s shooting at Hibbett Sports at the Greenwood West shopping center.

Man charged with aggravated assault that occurred at Hibbett Sports

A Greenwood man was arrested Saturday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Xavien Leahman, 31, 1363 Virden St., was being held at the Leflore County Jail on Monday. Bond has been set at $10,000.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
