Itta Bena man killed Thursday night

An Itta Bena man was shot and killed on Thursday night.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said Raphael Warren, 29, was shot and killed on the 200 block of Douglas Street in Itta Bena. He was declared dead at 8:15 p.m.
Itta Bena Police Chief James Stonewall was unavailable for comment on Friday morning.

Greenwood man charged with 2 counts of capital murder, 1 count of aggravated assault

A man believed by authorities to have killed his wife and brother-in-law late Saturday has turned himself in.
Robert Earl Pritchett Jr., 32, arrived at the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department at 1 a.m. Tuesday morning and was being held Thursday at the Leflore County Jail, Investigator Michael Baldwin said.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
