Man faces murder charge

A Greenwood man is now charged with murder in the Jan. 14 shooting death of a woman who lived with him.
Lavorris Gilbert, 30, 1304 Roosevelt Ave., who is accused of killing 35-year-old Jessica McClain, is jailed on $1 million bond.

No bond for man charged in home invasion

A Carroll County man who was in custody on four counts of attempted murder of a family in the Gravel Hill area on Monday night was denied bond Tuesday.
Steve Lamar Goss Jr., 42, a former Greenwood resident who lives in the Gravel Hill area, had his initial hearing Tuesday morning before Judge Tinesha Erve-Earnest.

Man charged in bank robbery

A Greenwood man has been charged with armed robbery in the theft of about $4,000 from BankPlus last Wednesday.
Vondregus Lopez Bailey, 53, of 201 Scott St., is being held in the Leflore County Jail on $250,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
