Teacher still fondly remembered

In a small yard next to Leflore Legacy Academy’s building on West Washington Street is a red cross, set up in the shade of a tree, bearing white text: “Honoring the Legacy of Casey Larry.”
It’s a monument dedicated to Larry’s time as an eighth-grade teacher at the charter school, his first teaching position, which he began in 2023.

Carroll Co. deputies recover stolen vehicle

Carroll County and Montgomery County Deputies working together were able to stop a stolen vehicle on I-55 near the Carroll and Montgomery county line on Wednesday.
The vehicle recovered was a BMW SUV, which had been reported stolen out of Memphis.

Lawyer: Postpone murder trial

A lawyer representing a Leflore County man accused of murder has requested that his client’s trial be postponed and that he receive a mental evaluation after discovering that his client has allegedly not received treatment for the last three years while incarcerated at the Leflore County Jail.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
