A 21-year-old Carroll County man has received a 20-year sentence in connection with the death of a toddler three years ago, according to a press release issued Monday by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department.
Tervonte Alexander pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Friday in the death of 9-month-old Sawyer Jerrell Holston of Coila.
Sawyer was found unresponsive at his mother’s residence on Carroll County Road 149 in November 2018, the Commonwealth reported.
Alexander was staying at the home at the time.
A 911 caller reported that Sawyer was unresponsive. Deputies arrived and performed CPR until an ambulance arrived to transport the child to Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Sawyer was later pronounced dead.
Following an autopsy, Sawyer’s death was determined to be a homicide, and Alexander was arrested by the Sheriff’s Department and charged soon after.
