The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has charged two Greenwood men in a shooting incident that occurred last week off Browning Road.
The Sheriff’s Department and Greenwood Police Department also are investigating how that incident may be connected with two incidents from earlier that day in Greenwood.
Jaquerinus Williams, 18, 705 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and Quindarius Andrews, 22, 1018 McLean St., were each charged with three counts of aggravated assault Monday afternoon. Both were in the Leflore County Jail Thursday afternoon on $300,000 bond.
Sheriff Ricky Banks said his department received a call on the afternoon of April 7 reporting that a white Chevrolet Tahoe parked on Amanda Drive had been struck several times by gunfire.
According to Banks, the shots were fired from a gray Nissan Maxima in the Brazil Homes complex off Browning Road. The four Greenwood men in the car had been following the Tahoe, Banks alleged.
There were three occupants in the Tahoe: a 41-year-old woman, who was driving, and two male passengers, ages 18 and 17. They were not hit and required no medical attention, Banks said. He was unable to say whether the three were related.
Two shell casings were recovered from inside the Tahoe, but Banks did not specify the type.
Williams was arrested later that day by the Sheriff’s Department and was held for investigation until being officially charged Monday, according to the Sheriff Department’s arrest docket.
Andrews and Williams were two of the four occupants in the Nissan, according to Banks, though neither man was driving.
Andrews was arrested Monday by the Greenwood Police Department and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. He was held for investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and charged with aggravated assault later that day.
The shooting was one of three shooting incidents that occurred that day. A teenager was shot in the 1000 block of Broad Street, and a Nissan Maxima occupied by four Greenwood men was struck by gunfire along U.S. 82 near Big Star.
It remains unclear why the Tahoe was targeted and shot, Banks said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
Arrest warrants have been issued for the two other men who were in the Nissan vehicle.
The Nissan that Andrews, Williams and two other men were in had been struck by gunfire later in the day April 7 along U.S. 82, near Big Star, according to authorities.
Deputy Police Chief Marvin Hammond had said the driver of the Nissan was struck by gunfire that came from another vehicle.
The driver of the Nissan was hit in the hand, causing him to lose control and crash into the vehicle of an innocent passerby, a 49-year-old Greenwood man.
None of the five men were seriously injured in the two-vehicle wreck.
Hammond had previously said that there were only three men in the Nissan.
Hammond had also said that authorities believe the shooting on U.S. 82 may be connected to the Broad Street shooting, in which a male Greenwood teenager was struck several times.
He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Jackson and remained in stable but critical condition Thursday, Hammond said.
Authorities believe there is some type of conflict going on between two groups in the county that has spilled into the streets of Greenwood, Hammond said, but he added that they have no “definitive answers.”
