Greenwood has lost another man to gun violence, bringing the total number of gun-related homicides in the county to five in less than a week.
Leflore County Deputy Coroner Will Gnemi confirmed the death of Darnaz Jones, 41.
He did not know where Jones was killed but said he was killed by gunshot.
Gnemi declared Jones dead at Greenwood Leflore Hospital at 10:57 p.m. Wednesday.
Less than 12 hours later, Deputy Police Chief Clifton King confirmed a shooting on Hope Street at about 11 a.m. Thursday. Gnemi could not confirm whether that shooting resulted in a death.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said she has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. Friday to address the recent spike in gun violence.
On Sunday, three men were killed in two separate shooting incidents less than an hour apart. Justin Doyle, 29, was killed on Ridge Street. Quincy Turner and Ashton Davis were killed while exiting a gas station on Main Street.
A suspect was arrested Tuesday evening in connection to the shooting deaths of Turner and Davis but had not been charged as of Thursday.
Demarious Jackson, 23, was found dead in a vehicle on U.S. 49 between Sidon and Cruger on Tuesday.
Of the 17 homicides in Leflore County this year, 15 have been the result of gunfire, according to reporting by the Commonwealth.
