A wave of gun violence crashed into Greenwood on Sunday, with three shootings leaving three men dead and one injured.
Police Chief Terrence Craft said two shootings that resulted in deaths may be related.
The first death was of Justin Doyle, 32, in the 500 block of Ridge Street.
Craft said officers received a call reporting a fight involving weapons at about 6:40 p.m.
He said officers arrived to find Doyle, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Craft said it has not been determined what kind of gun had been used.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders pronounced Doyle dead at the scene at 7:51 p.m.
Only minutes later, Sanders would be called less than two miles away to the 800 block of Main Street regarding two more shooting victims.
Craft said officers responded to shots fired at around 7:30 p.m. He said an unidentified man was witnessed approaching on foot with a weapon and shot two men.
Quincy Turner, 31, and Ashton Davis, 26, both suffered lethal gunshot wounds, said Sanders. Turner was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:57 p.m. Davis was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
Turner had worked at Greenwood Country Club since 2021.
“Whatever the need, he was sure to answer, ‘I got you!’’ said Johnna Metz, the club’s general manager. “In fact, during a conversation with him Sunday morning, when I asked if he had what he needed for the day’s work, he said, ‘You know I got you, Mrs. Johnna.’”
Metz said Turner will be remembered for his warmth and generous spirit.
“He was loyal and treated everyone as a friend,” she said.
Craft said it is believed that both Turner and Davis were shot with the same semi-automatic weapon. The chief said that the suspect was still at large and police were pursuing leads.
A third shooting, unrelated to those in the evening, occurred around 11:30 a.m. Sunday on St. Charles Street.
Craft said a 32-year-old man was shot in the back of the head. He said the victim had had some sort of altercation earlier in the day with the suspect and the suspect returned later and fired the shot.
The victim was still alive Monday and being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Craft said a person of interest had been identified but no arrests had been made.
There have now been 15 homicides in Leflore County this year, including 13 resulting from gunfire, according to reporting by the Commonwealth.
