The death of a Greenwood man last week is now being investigated as a homicide.
Desi Jackson Jr., 20, was found dead by his brother close to the train tracks near Avenue C and Bryant Avenue on the morning of July 21.
Police Chief Terrence Craft confirmed Wednesday that Jackson had been shot in the back of the head.
Jackson’s body was discovered on a route he regularly traveled on the way to his grandmother’s house. Police initially believed that foul play was not involved.
The body was transported to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson, where an autopsy was performed.
The victim’s father, Desi Jackson Sr. of Memphis, said he received the results Wednesday. He said he was “at peace” with knowing how his son died but was also angry that it took this long to find out that the death was due to a gunshot wound.
“They just treated it as a natural cause,” he said. “Ain’t talked to nobody. It’s been a week. They haven’t questioned nobody.”
Craft said that an investigation is underway but at this time there are no suspects. Jackson was adamant about getting to the bottom of what happened. “My son’s murder will not go unsolved,” he said.
His son’s death is the seventh homicide this year in Leflore County and the fifth by firearm, according to reporting by the Commonwealth.
