A Greenwood man has been charged in a highway shooting last month that killed an 18-year-old Amanda Elzy High School graduate and injured his brother.
Police Chief Terrence Craft said Taighe Stewart, 29, 104 Country Club Drive, was arrested and charged Monday with murder and aggravated assault.
The shooting occurred July 23 on U.S. 82. Witnesses reported seeing shots fired from a black Kia Optima at a Chevrolet Impala driven by Terry Randle Jr. Riding with Randle was his 23-year-old brother, Jacori.
Authorities said shell casings and witness statements indicated the gunfire coming from the Kia was fired from a semi-automatic rifle.
Terry Randle Jr. was shot three times, including once to the head, and died from his injuries at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on July 25. Jacori Randle was transported to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis for wounds to his back. He was later released.
Craft said that because Stewart’s mother works at the Leflore County Jail, Stewart was taken to the Holmes County Detention Center.
Craft declined to specify how Stewart was identified because the incident is still under investigation. “I’d rather not release all the details on it yet because we’ve got a few more we’ve got to pick up,” he said. “I really don’t want to get somebody killed in the process of doing that.”
