The attorney for the Leflore County Board of Supervisors underwent surgery Monday afternoon at a Jackson hospital after suffering an attack at her home.
Neysha Sanders, who was appointed as the board’s attorney just last week, was in stable condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, according to her mother, former Leflore County Circuit Court Judge Betty Sanders.
Betty Sanders said at about 8:30 p.m. that her daughter was sedated following surgery. She suffered multiple injuries but no broken bones and no neurological damage.
Betty Sanders said she was waiting to speak with a nurse to learn the full extent of her daughter’s injuries.
Betty Sanders said she was able to see her daughter before the surgery but was not able to speak with her. Neysha Sanders was aware of her mother’s presence, Betty Sanders said.
Neysha Sanders, 52, is expected to make a full recovery, her mother said.
Betty Sanders said she did not know the circumstances of the attack. Nor did Robert Collins, the president of the county board.
“All I know is someone broke in on her this morning and beat her up pretty bad, but I don’t know what the causes were,” Collins said Monday. “I don’t know if it was a burglary. I just don’t know none of that.”
Sheriff Ricky Banks, reached Monday evening away from his office, confirmed the attack but did not have immediate access to more information and could not provide further details. He said there had been no arrests.
Sanders was appointed full-time board attorney after the death last month of Joyce Chiles from lung cancer. Sanders had previously been contracted to provide legal counsel to the board when Chiles was absent due to health issues.
Betty Sanders said she was “grateful for those who reached out and those who had prayed” for her daughter.
