Three judges from the Mississippi Court of Appeals are scheduled to visit Mississippi Valley State University later this month to hear oral arguments in an appeal.
The visit is planned for March 23 at 10 a.m. in the Carver A. Randle Auditorium, located in the W.A. Butts Social Science Building, according to a release from the Mississippi Administrative Office of Courts.
It is a feature of the “Court on the Road” program, which schedules oral arguments on college campuses and other locations as an opportunity for students and the public to watch proceedings in action.
The appeal that will be heard is in the case of Gilbert S. Macvaugh III vs. State of Mississippi.
Macvaugh, a psychologist from Greenville, was appointed in 2014 by the state Attorney General’s Office to work in a post-conviction appeal of a capital murder case. The state argues that Macvaugh failed to complete his duties and subsequently filed to have him removed and held in contempt of court. Macvaugh argues that his due process was violated because he was not properly served notice.
Attorneys on both sides will have 30 minutes each to speak. Judges will be available for questions afterward, but will not speak about the case itself.
